Atiku Opens Commanding Lead in ADC Presidential Primary as Collation Pauses

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has taken a substantial lead in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primaries, with results from 25 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) giving him more than a million votes ahead of his rivals.

According to figures announced by the party, Atiku has polled 1,390,276 votes so far.

Former Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi is second with 248,455 votes, while former banker Mohammed Hayatu-Ddeen has secured 156,075 votes.

The tally covers 26 regions, leaving results from 12 states still outstanding.

Collation was suspended shortly before midnight on Tuesday and is due to resume at 8 pm on Wednesday.

The remaining states are Bauchi, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Katsina, Kwara, Lagos, Ogun and Rivers.

In his home state of Adamawa Atiku received 177,141 votes against Amaechi’s 1,896 and Hayatu-Ddeen’s 18,949.

He also led in Kano with 155,595 votes, Gombe with 136,933, Borno with 86,084 and Niger with 79,206.

Other strong showings came in Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Yobe, Taraba, Kogi and Benue.

Amaechi recorded notable wins in Akwa Ibom and Ebonyi, polling 20,343 votes to Atiku’s 17,623 in the former, and 6,400 to 1,210 in the latter.

Hayatu-Ddeen’s best results came in Borno with 23,011 votes and Benue with 22,141, though he trailed the two frontrunners elsewhere.

In the FCT, Atiku led with 18,704 votes ahead of Amaechi’s 14,721 and Hayatu-Ddeen’s 5,576.

Both Amaechi and Hayatu-Ddeen have rejected the results, alleging widespread irregularities in Monday’s primaries across the 36 states and the FCT.
