Nigerians Accuse MTN of Unexplained Data Depletion as Sowore Calls for Protest

MTN Nigeria is facing criticism from subscribers over complaints of unexplained data depletion, with activist Omoyele Sowore calling for a protest under the hashtag #OccupyMTN.

Dozens of users shared accounts of data bundles reducing without matching usage, according to posts on social media platform X.

Complaints included reports of 5.5GB disappearing within an hour of browsing and 12GB being depleted despite no recorded activity.

One user recounted buying 11GB of data during a power outage.

The user said power was restored five minutes later and they switched to WiFi, and that after about four hours, MTN sent a message stating the remaining data was 3GB.

"The most stunning part was when they sent the daily usage message saying I used 800MB throughout that same day.

"So why did they say my 11GB was remaining 3GB if my total data consumption for the day was 800MB?," the user said.

Reacting to the complaints, Omoyele Sowore posted on X that "MTN @MTNNG data thievery is no longer a glitch, it’s system robbery cum extortion."

He added that "Nigerians are paying more for less every single day. This scam must be put to an end! Enough talk. It’s time to pick a date and #OccupyMTN."

Other users also penned their frustration with one saying: "how are they going to get to ₦10 trillion by year end if they don't pull stupid sh_t like this."

Another user wrote: "It's time to let MTN know that their days of robbing Nigerians is over."

Reports said MTN responded to one complaint by attributing the issue to usage and requesting the customer’s details privately.

The company has not issued a broader statement on the matter.
