Mohamed Salah will bring his nine-year Liverpool career to a close at the end of the 2025–26 season after the club confirmed an agreement to part ways with the forward when his contract expires.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Liverpool FC described Salah’s time at the club as “remarkable,” adding that the decision was communicated early at the player’s request in recognition of the supporters who have backed him throughout his spell at Anfield.
The 33-year-old, who signed his most recent contract extension last April with a view to staying until 2027, will instead depart as a free agent at the end of next season.
Liverpool said Salah wanted clarity over his future “due to his respect and gratitude” for the fans.
Salah leaves as one of the most decorated players in the club’s modern history.
Since arriving from AS Roma in 2017, he has helped Liverpool to two Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, the FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FA Cup, two League Cups and a Community Shield.
His 255 goals in 435 appearances place him third on the club’s all-time scoring list, while he has won the Premier League Golden Boot on four occasions.

Despite the announcement, there is still important business ahead before his farewell.
Liverpool are reigning league champions and remain in the Champions League, with a quarter-final tie against holders Paris Saint-Germain.
They also face Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals and are battling to secure Champions League qualification through the league, sitting fifth with seven matches remaining.
Under head coach Arne Slot, that position would currently be enough given England’s projected extra qualifying place.
In a video message shared on social media, Salah confirmed the decision in his own words, describing the announcement as “the first part of my farewell.”
He spoke of his deep emotional connection to the club, the city and its supporters, saying Liverpool had given him “the best time of my life” and would always remain home to him and his family.
Salah added that his focus remains firmly on finishing the current campaign as strongly as possible, with Liverpool confirming that full celebrations of his legacy will come later, when he finally bids goodbye to Anfield.
