Delta Approves Recruitment of 700 Health Workers

The Delta State Government has approved the recruitment of more than 700 medical and non-medical personnel to strengthen healthcare delivery across the state.

The State Commissioner for Health, Dr Joseph Onojaeme, announced the decision at a press briefing in Asaba on Tuesday, describing it as part of a sustained effort to match staffing levels with expanding health infrastructure.

According to Onojaeme, the approval follows increased demand for services arising from recent upgrades, including the elevation of General Hospital Warri to a central hospital and the near completion of the Mother and Child Hospital in Ekpan.

He said 295 personnel would be deployed to the Hospital Management Board, while Delta State University Teaching Hospital is to absorb 120 staff.

A further 100 positions have been approved for the College of Health Technology in Ovrode.

In addition, Asaba Specialist Hospital will recruit 60 workers, while Warri Central Hospital is to take on 12 personnel.

Onojaeme said the exercise was partly aimed at addressing workforce shortages linked to the migration of healthcare professionals, often referred to locally as the “japa syndrome.”

He added that a standing directive to promptly replace exiting staff had helped maintain service continuity.

The commissioner also pointed to ongoing investments, including a state public health laboratory nearing completion and a new psychiatric hospital under construction, both of which will require additional skilled manpower.

On medical technology, he disclosed that the government has procured three 1.5-Tesla, helium-free MRI machines, citing lower operating and maintenance costs.

He also said expanded dialysis facilities had reduced treatment costs to as low as N45,000 in some centres.

Onojaeme assured that recruitment would be transparent and merit-based, with vacancies advertised in national and local newspapers.

The roles will span consultants, doctors, nurses, pharmacists, laboratory scientists, physiotherapists, health technologists, administrators and support staff.

He stressed the initiative is expected to improve service delivery and health outcomes across Delta State.
