Nigerian Stars Shine Across Europe as 2025/26 Season Heats Up

Nigerian footballers were in the spotlight across Europe over the weekend, delivering goals, assists and commanding performances as the 2025/26 campaign gathered pace.

From England to Spain, Germany, Italy and France, Super Eagles players made their mark for their clubs.

Italy

Maduka Okoye (Udinese)

Maduka Okoye produced another assured display between the sticks, keeping his seventh clean sheet of the season as Udinese defeated Genoa 2-0 away on Friday night.

Genoa struck the woodwork twice, but Okoye’s organisation and sharp reflexes ensured his side held firm.

The recalled Super Eagles goalkeeper registered two saves, two punches, two clearances and six recoveries, underlining his growing consistency in Serie A.

Germany

Philip Otele (Hamburger SV)

Philip Otele marked his maiden Super Eagles call-up with his first Bundesliga goal, though Hamburg fell 3-2 to Borussia Dortmund.

The winger struck in the 19th minute, showing composure to beat Gregor Kobel after William Mikelbrencis’ assist. On loan from Basel, Otele’s rise in Germany continues apace.

Felix Agu (Werder Bremen)

Felix Agu made a telling impact off the bench, setting up Justin Njinmah’s winner in Bremen’s 1-0 victory over Wolfsburg.

The full-back’s clever pass in the 68th minute secured three vital points in Bremen’s relegation fight.

Spain

Ademola Lookman (Atlético Madrid)

Ademola Lookman was back on the scoresheet in the Madrid derby, giving Atlético a first-half lead with a close-range finish after Giuliano Simeone’s inventive backheel.

Despite his strike, Real Madrid rallied to win 3-2, with Lookman withdrawn just before the hour mark.

Elsewhere, Akor Adams featured for Sevilla in their 2-0 defeat to Valencia, while Umar Sadiq came off the bench for the visitors. Chidera Ejuke remained unused.

England

Taiwo Awoniyi, Ola Aina (Nottingham Forest)

Taiwo Awoniyi struck late as Nottingham Forest stunned Tottenham Hotspur 3-0. Introduced in the 71st minute, the striker sealed victory with his second Premier League goal of the season, though his shirt-off celebration earned a booking. Ola Aina completed the full match as Forest boosted their survival hopes.

Alex Iwobi, Calvin Bassey, Samuel Chukwueze (Fulham)

Fulham’s Nigerian contingent all featured in a 3-1 win over Burnley. Bassey and Iwobi played the full 90 minutes, with Iwobi cautioned late on, while Chukwueze came off the bench in the second half.

Frank Onyeka (Coventry City)

Onyeka played the full match as Championship leaders Coventry City eased past Swansea 3-0, edging closer to Premier League promotion despite the midfielder picking up a booking.

France

Moses Simon (Paris FC)

Moses Simon featured for 84 minutes in Paris FC’s 3-2 win over Le Havre, but his struggles in front of goal continued. The winger has now gone 13 Ligue 1 matches without a goal or assist, as his side battle to avoid relegation.

From Awoniyi’s decisive strike in London to Okoye’s commanding presence in Italy, Nigerian stars continue to shape the narrative across Europe’s top leagues, offering encouragement for Super Eagles fans ahead of international duty.
