Fire Outbreak in Walthamstow Brings Out 20 Engines, 125 Firefighters

A serious fire tore through a residential area of Walthamstow in east London on Sunday evening, prompting  response from the London Fire Brigade and temporary evacuations of local residents.

Twenty fire engines and around 125 firefighters were deployed to the blaze near Vallentin Road and Shernhall Street after more than 100 calls were made to the emergency services from around 6:30 pm.

The fire reportedly affected two houses, around 30 gardens and sheds and a railway embankment before being brought under control by 10:35 pm.

Residents in the area were advised to keep windows and doors shut because of a significant volume of smoke, though that guidance was lifted once the fire was contained.

Motorists were warned to avoid the area and the Weaver Overground railway line was partially closed during the incident.

Walthamstow Member of Parliament (MP), Stella Creasy described the fire as having started on the train lines.

"We have got a major incident in Wood Street. There is a serious fire with a lot of roads and people being evacuated," she said.

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) said the cause of the blaze remained unknown.

Two rest centres were set up for evacuated residents, though Creasy later confirmed most were being stood down as the majority of residents were permitted to return home.

No injuries were reported, and most properties in the area escaped damage, though sheds and gardens were affected.

LFB Assistant Commissioner, Tom Goodall said crews would remain at the scene through the night.

"The Brigade will retain a significant presence on the scene through the night, working to fully extinguish the fire," he said.
