Troops Arrest Chadian Woman with Drugs, Alcohol for Lake Chad Terrorists

Nigerian troops have intercepted a suspected foreign drug courier carrying cannabis, industrial chemicals and alcoholic beverages allegedly destined for terrorist fighters in the Lake Chad Islands.

The suspect, identified as Rachael Samuel, a 48-year-old Chadian national from Kelo in the Chari-Baguirmi Province of the Republic of Chad, was arrested on Thursday, 9 July 2026, during an intensive search operation along the Maiduguri-Monguno axis in Borno State.

She was intercepted while travelling towards Kwatan Doron Baga in Kukawa Local Government Area.

Troops of Sector 3, Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI, recovered seven compressed bundles of suspected cannabis sativa weighing around 30 kilogrammes.

Others were two 10-litre containers of hydromercuric chloride popularly known as "Suck and Die," one carton of 48 bottles of dry gin, 61 bottles of herbal alcoholic beverages, a mobile phone, two ATM cards, personal effects and cash.

The haul was said to be worth millions of naira.

Acting Military Information Officer Captain Mohammed Goni said preliminary findings indicated the consignment was being moved to locations within the Lake Chad Islands, a known haven for terrorist elements.

"Available intelligence has consistently shown that illicit drugs and intoxicants are frequently used by terrorist groups to stimulate fighters, suppress fear and facilitate violent operations

"By intercepting the consignment before it reached its destination, the troops have disrupted another critical aspect of the terrorists' support network," he said.

Samuel is currently in military custody, with all recovered exhibits secured pending handover to law enforcement agencies for investigation and prosecution.

The Theatre Command commended the troops for their vigilance and urged members of the public to continue providing credible information to security agencies to support efforts to restore lasting peace in the North-East.
