Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in Benin Republic’s capital, Cotonou, ahead of the inauguration of President-elect Romuald Wadagni.
Shettima is attending the ceremony on Sunday, 24 May 2026, as a special guest representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the inauguration scheduled to take place at the Presidential Palace.
The Vice President landed at Cardinal Bernadin Gantin International Airport, where he was received by Benin’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Olushegun Adjadi Bakari.
He was also met by Nigeria’s Ambassador-designate to Benin Republic, Mopelola Adeola-Ibrahim, Minister I at the Nigerian Embassy in Cotonou, Bukar Kalambe, and Head of Chancery Emmanuel Nwosa.

According to a statement from the Office of the Vice President, Shettima was briefed by Bakari and other diplomats on the programme for the inauguration.
Speaking on Nigeria’s ties with its neighbour, Shettima praised the long-standing relationship between the two countries and stressed the need to deepen cooperation on cultural, diplomatic and socio-economic fronts.
He said the close historical and geographical links between Nigeria and Benin made it important to sustain and strengthen bilateral engagement for mutual benefit.
Shettima, accompanied by senior aides and government officials, is expected to return to Nigeria after the inauguration events.
