Former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi has held discussions with three South African cabinet ministers and party leaders on issues of migration, regional collaboration and peaceful coexistence between Nigeria and South Africa.
The meetings took place on Saturday in Cape Town, a day after Obi met members of the Nigerian community in the city.
Obi said he spoke with Leon Schreiber, South Africa’s Minister of Home Affairs and a senior figure in the Democratic Alliance; Velenkosini Hlabisa, Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and leader of the Inkatha Freedom Party; and Gayton McKenzie, Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture and leader of the Patriotic Alliance.
He described the talks as "productive and candid," focusing on challenges affecting both countries, including migration, economic strain, youth unemployment, security and tensions faced by African foreigners in South Africa.

"Nigeria and South Africa, both prominent African nations, must enhance dialogue, bolster cooperation, and seek solutions based on justice, mutual respect, and adherence to the rule of law," Obi said.
He added that in challenging times, leaders and citizens needed to show responsible leadership, compassion and restraint.
The group stressed the importance of law-abiding behaviour, avoiding violence and resisting hate or provocation.
They said grievances should be addressed through lawful institutions using democratic and constitutional processes.
"The progress of Africa hinges on our ability to create unity, foster economic inclusivity, invest in our communities, and uphold the dignity of every African, no matter where they live," Obi said.
