Liverpool Goalkeeper Fined for Using Phone while Driving on M6

Liverpool goalkeeper, Giorgi Mamardashvili has been fined £440 after being caught using his mobile phone while driving on the M6.

The 25-year-old was stopped by Cheshire Police at around 3.45 pm on 27 January, 2026 on the southbound carriageway near Warrington.

He was convicted under the Single Justice Procedure after failing to respond to a prosecution notice.

Warrington Combined Court heard on Friday that an officer saw a black Audi fail to move to a clear lane, which “caught my attention.”

The officer said he then saw the driver holding a phone near the centre of the steering wheel and “appeared to be watching something on the screen whilst he was driving at motorway speed.”

Mamardashvili, who produced a Georgian driving licence, was handed six penalty points.

In addition, he was ordered to pay £120 in costs and a £176 victim surcharge.

The shot-stopper joined Liverpool in 2024 and officially became part of the squad for the 2025/26 season.

He has made 20 appearances this term, keeping three clean sheets while deputising for injured first-choice keeper Alisson.

According to checks, drivers caught using a hand-held phone can face a £200 fine and six penalty points, as well as charges for not having proper control of a vehicle.

Figures released by police show that 247 motorists across England and Wales were prosecuted last week for using a phone while driving, with fines totalling more than £41,000.
