Governor Douye Diri has said the adoption of a consensus approach in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has strengthened internal cohesion in the South-South, positioning the party for the 2027 general election.
Speaking on Wednesday at the APC South-South Zonal Congress in Asaba, Diri argued that consensus-driven leadership selection had reduced friction and violence traditionally associated with party congresses, while enabling the region to “speak with one voice” at the national level.
Diri, who chairs the South-South Governors’ Forum, said the shift was a departure from delegate-heavy contests that previously fuelled rancour.
He urged leaders to resist internal divisions and work collectively to secure electoral success in 2027.
The governor also commended President Bola Tinubu for what he described as stabilising reforms within the party, adding that the consensus model had delivered executives from ward to zonal levels without disruption.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio praised the outgoing national vice-chairman, Victor Giadom, for consolidating support among South-South governors and strengthening the party’s regional base.

Akpabio stated the region would deliver its highest vote tally yet for Tinubu in 2027, stressing the appointment of a Senate President from the South-South as evidence of renewed recognition.
In separate goodwill messages, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and governors from Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Edo and Cross River States pledged unified backing for Tinubu’s second-term bid.
Giadom was returned unopposed as zonal chairman alongside seven other executives after the immediate past zonal leadership was dissolved.
The motion was moved by the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Emomotimi Guwor, and seconded by his Bayelsa counterpart, Abraham Ingobere.
Addressing delegates, Giadom said the turnout of governors, lawmakers, ministers and party stakeholders showed the South-South’s resolve to secure victories for all APC candidates in the next election cycle.
