Human rights activist and Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore has been confirmed as the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) ahead of Nigeria’s next general election.
Sowore was named the party’s flagbearer at the AAC presidential primary in Abuja on Tuesday.
He told delegates that the party was Nigeria’s "only genuine opposition" and the country’s only registered socialist party committed to tackling corruption, inequality and elite dominance.
He said the AAC was not seeking to join the existing political structure but to overhaul it.
"We are not here to have a seat at the table. We are here to shatter the table from which Nigerians have long been subjected to evil neo-colonial policies designed to keep us as second-class humans," he said.
Sowore criticised successive governments for adopting economic policies he said were dictated by international financial institutions, arguing that millions of Nigerians still face poverty, unemployment and insecurity.

He linked rising insecurity to economic inequality and the exclusion of young people from opportunities.
"When a few people take everything and leave millions of energetic young people without jobs, hope, or a future, they become easy recruits for forces of destruction," he said.
The candidate promised that an AAC government would break up monopolies, nationalise strategic sectors and prosecute corrupt public officials.
He also unveiled four economic models intended to replace what he called Nigeria’s "failed Black Economy."
The proposed Orange Economy would focus on youth empowerment through technology, sports, entertainment, arts, culture and digital innovation.
According to him, the Purple Economy would target women’s economic inclusion through access to finance, education, healthcare, entrepreneurship and land ownership.
The Blue Economy would develop Nigeria’s waterways and aquatic resources for transport, clean energy and industrialisation, while the Green Economy would prioritise renewable energy, sustainable agriculture and climate-conscious development.
Sowore announced that the AAC and the #RevolutionNow movement would hold a "Nationwide State of Resistance" on 5 August to protest corruption, oppression and economic hardship.
"The struggle continues. Victory is certain," he said, as supporters responded with chants of "Take It Back! Action!"
