NIMC Pushes Nigeria’s Digital Identity System to improve Services, Security

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has restated its commitment to building a secure and inclusive digital public infrastructure to strengthen governance and service delivery across Nigeria.

Speaking at a digital conference in Abuja, NIMC Director General and Chief Executive Officer (DG/CEO) Engr Abisoye Coker-Odusote said the commission is driving reforms to expand the use of digital identity systems for citizens and residents.

She was represented by the Head of Infrastructure Technology and Identity Databases, Sulaiman Falade.

Central to the plan is the National Identification Number (NIN), which NIMC described as a key tool for digital authentication, identity verification, and access to both public and private sector services.

Following a Presidential Directive issued on 5 April 2024, all Ministries, Departments and Agencies have been mandated to ensure the effective use of the NIN in policies on data capture, identity verification and biometric authentication across digital services.

Coker-Odusote said the initiative supports the Federal Government’s goal of creating a unified, secure and interoperable digital identity ecosystem.

She added that through the deployment of the National Public Key Infrastructure, Nigeria is working to build trust in digital transactions, protect citizens’ data, and enable safer online interactions.

The DG called on public and private sector stakeholders to back the implementation of the digital identity framework, saying NIMC would continue to use technology and innovation to build a more connected and resilient system.
