Federal Government has approved an overhaul of sports infrastructure across Nigeria, in a bid to restore facilities to international standards and boost youth development.
The National Sports Commission (NSC) said the programme, which is the first phase of the initiative, will include the full rehabilitation and upgrade of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.
Works are set to cover the running track, floodlights, media and athlete facilities, alongside the installation of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology.
As part of the project, the government will also build a High Performance Centre and an anti-doping laboratory, construct new training pitches, and convert the existing 200-room athletes’ hostel into a hotel.

Medical facilities are to be upgraded with new equipment, while a new sports centre will provide office space for all national sports federations.
The NSC added the plan extends beyond Abuja and that states set to host future National Sports Festivals will receive direct support, and mini sports centres will be constructed nationwide.
Facilities will also be established in selected tertiary institutions to strengthen grassroots and school sports, with the aim of developing centres of excellence.
According to the commission, the investment aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and is intended to position sport as a driver of youth empowerment, economic growth, talent development and national unity.
The NSC described the scale of the investment as "unprecedented" and said it would be rolled out in phases, with further details on timelines and funding expected in the coming months.
