Nigeria on Alert as NCDC Monitors Ebola Outbreaks in Congo, Uganda

Nigeria has no confirmed cases of Ebola Virus Disease, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) said on 17 May 2026, but the agency is stepping up monitoring following outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and an imported case in Uganda.

NCDC said it was working with the Port Health Service (PHS) and state health authorities to intensify surveillance, laboratory testing and infection prevention measures at points of entry and across the country.

"NCDC is closely monitoring the situation and working with relevant stakeholders to ensure continued vigilance and preparedness within the public health system,"  the agency said in a public health advisory signed by Director-General Dr Jide Idris.

The advisory listed symptoms of Ebola to include fever, weakness, headache, muscle pain, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhoea, and in severe cases, unexplained bleeding.

It added that the incubation period ranges from 2 to 21 days.

NCDC revealed it had strengthened event-based surveillance, laboratory readiness and risk communication, and was coordinating with states to ensure healthcare workers remain alert to potential cases with travel history to affected areas.

The agency advised Nigerians to remain calm, avoid spreading misinformation, practise regular hand hygiene, avoid contact with bodily fluids of sick persons and bushmeat from unknown sources, and report unusual illnesses promptly to the nearest health facility.

Healthcare workers were urged to maintain a high index of suspicion for Ebola and to strictly follow infection prevention protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment and early isolation of suspected cases.

NCDC further announced it would continue to monitor global and regional developments and provide updates as needed.

The public can contact the agency on its toll-free line 6232 or via its verified social media channels for verified information.
