NAFDAC Clears BON Bread Maker after Investigation

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has cleared the maker of BON Bread of any regulatory breaches, following an investigation into public concerns over its shelf life.

In a press release issued on 17 May 2026, NAFDAC said laboratory tests confirmed that samples of BON Bread contained calcium propionate, an approved preservative, within the limits set by the Codex Alimentarius food standards framework.

The investigation began after a social media post on 13 April 2026 claimed a loaf of bread remained free from mould for more than two months.

Although the post did not name a brand, Food & Food Integrated Company Limited, the manufacturer of BON Bread, said publicly that the product was theirs and described the allegation as misleading.

NAFDAC said it inspected the company’s bakery in Abuja and collected samples from both the production site and the open market for analysis.

The tests found no objectionable substances, including bromate or non-nutritive sweeteners.

"The Agency therefore assures the public that Food & Food Integrated Company Limited is not in violation of any NAFDAC regulation," the statement said.

It added that the company had maintained compliance since it began operations in 2006 and had undergone several licence renewals without penalties or product recalls.

NAFDAC urged the public to report issues about regulated products through its offices nationwide or via its call centre to allow prompt, evidence-based investigations.
