NDC Confirms Date for Nationwide Primaries

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has confirmed its presidential, national assembly, governorship and state assembly primaries will still take place nationwide, but has adjusted the timetable due to Eid-el-Kabir travel disruption.

NDC said the exercise remains set for 29 May 2026, in line with its original 28-29 May schedule.

However, public holidays and flight cancellations, it insisted, have left many aspirants and members of the screening team stranded in Abuja.

Under the revised plan, 28 May will be used for arrivals, documentation with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies, and consultative meetings with stakeholders, party elders and aspirants in each state.

NDC upheld the actual primaries will now be held on 29 May.

The party stressed that state agencies, including the police, INEC and Department of State Services (DSS), are not to take part in the 28 May programmes.

Any activity outside the approved guidelines would be unauthorised and illegal, the party stressed.

On 29 May the process will run in four stages such as presidential affirmation, national assembly primaries or affirmation, state assembly primaries or affirmation, and governorship primaries or affirmation.

Results, it said, will be collated by the respective teams and sent to the national headquarters for the National Working Committee (NWC) to announce and that no state executive or team has the authority to declare results.

The party called for understanding and urged participants to conduct themselves responsibly, adding that it has zero tolerance for violence, disorderly conduct and hooliganism.
