BREAKING: Tinubu Accepts APC Nomination for 2027 Election

President Bola Tinubu has accepted the All Progressives Congress (APC) nomination to stand as the party’s presidential candidate in the 2027 election, saying continuity was needed to consolidate reforms and secure progress.

Speaking on Sunday 24 May 2026 at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja, Tinubu said he accepted the nomination "with humility and profound gratitude."

He told party members that the task ahead was to "affirm that continuity is essential to consolidate reform, secure progress, and strengthen the foundation of a modern Nigeria."

Tinubu recalled that four years earlier he had stood as an aspirant alongside other contenders and was supported by former President Muhammadu Buhari.

He said he now returned as incumbent president, "humbled by your enduring support, encouraged by your continued confidence, and imbued with renewed passion for the tasks ahead."

The President thanked the party leadership, governors, the National Working Committee (NWC), lawmakers and party members for their role in maintaining party unity.

He also acknowledged Nigerians who he said had supported "the difficult but necessary path of reform we have chosen to rebuild our nation."

On the economy, Tinubu said electoral reforms had strengthened the credibility of the democratic process and that voting patterns and expectations were shifting.

According to him, the economy had undergone structural reform supported by new tax laws and fiscal policies that had boosted revenue collection for the federation.

He believed the administration had moved away from fuel subsidies and unstable exchange rates, and pointed to a turnaround in the naira and rising foreign reserves.

Tinubu maintained that macroeconomic stability had been strengthened through improved revenue performance, financial management and fiscal coordination, despite inflationary disruption from the war in Iran and the Middle East crisis.

He said the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) had disbursed more than N282bn to over 1.5 million beneficiaries.

On power, Tinubu asserted 2.5 million meters had been supplied under the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI), and a N4 trillion bond programme had been set up to settle verified legacy debts owed to generation and gas companies.

He disclosed that power generation had peaked at 6,000MW, 50 per cent higher than what was inherited.

Tinubu declared infrastructure was being prioritised across transportation, power, digital connectivity, housing and irrigation.

He cited coastal roads and the Sokoto-Badagry highway as projects designed to last more than 100 years.

He also upheld airports and seaports were being upgraded after decades of neglect, and that oil and gas reforms were attracting billions of dollars in fresh investment.

On security, he said the government had intensified efforts to strengthen the security architecture, support the armed forces and police, and build partnerships with local communities.

He stated investment had gone into intelligence, surveillance and equipment, and that the root causes of insecurity were being addressed.

He said he expected the National Assembly to amend the constitution to allow the creation of state police as a matter of national emergency.

Acknowledging ongoing challenges, Tinubu insisted many Nigerians still struggled with rising costs and economic adjustment.

"We do not dismiss these concerns; we understand them and govern not in comfort, but in reality with honesty and action," he said.

He affirmed his mission was to build a Nigeria where lives and property were secure, enterprise thrived, workers earned with dignity, young people found opportunity and farmers prospered.

He called on political opponents to join in nation-building through dialogue and engagement.

"Democracy is sustained not by uniformity, but by diversity, by a shared belief in the nation and the blending of ideas," he said.

Tinubu concluded by urging Nigerians to consolidate gains, tackle challenges and seize the promise of a greater tomorrow, saying the next election should be a reaffirmation of democratic maturity.
