UNIJOS to Resume Academic Activities after Plateau Attack

Academic life at the University of Jos (UNIJOS) is set to return to normal following weeks of disruption caused by the March 29 assault on Angwan Rukuba in Plateau State, which claimed more than 33 lives, including two students of the institution.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Tanko Ishaya confirmed during a press briefing on Thursday that the violence directly affected the university community, leaving two students dead, three others injured, and a staff member also receiving treatment for gunshot wounds.

Recall that the deceased students, Abel Joro Gershon and Adeyomo Oluwafemi Temitope, were killed in separate incidents linked to the unrest.

The attack prompted a government-imposed curfew in Jos North, forcing the university to suspend first-semester examinations.

Ishaya explained that exams scheduled from March 30 were postponed in line with security directives, particularly after fresh violence erupted on April 1 along Bauchi Road.

He revealed that while some state governments evacuated students, the move created unnecessary panic, stressing that the university never officially closed.

Let me state clearly that since the beginning of the crisis, no single breach of the peace was recorded on any of our campuses,” Ishaya said.

He added that security agencies responded swiftly to protect staff and students.

According to him, senior military and police officials visited the institution to reinforce safety measures and that with calm now restored, examinations will resume on April 13.

As we speak, campus security has been greatly enhanced. I want to assure students and parents that security has been beefed up on campus and in the entire city of Jos,” he said.

The university extended condolences to the families of the deceased and urged continued collaboration between government, security agencies, host communities, and the media to prevent future tragedies.
