Jos Attacks: Tinubu Orders 5,000 Surveillance Cameras in Plateau

President Bola Tinubu has directed the immediate installation of more than 5,000 surveillance cameras across Plateau State in response to the recent killings in Jos.

The announcement came during a town hall meeting in Jos on Thursday, where the President met political and traditional leaders just days after the Palm Sunday attack in Angwan Rukuba that claimed at least 27 lives.

Tinubu said the move would strengthen law enforcement efforts and allow security agencies to identify perpetrators in real time.

He invited the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, to outline the plan.

The Honourable Minister for Communication is here to give you assurance that we are going to install immediately a network of cameras that will help the law enforcement agencies to identify the troublemakers instantly, over 5,000 of that,” Tinubu told the gathering.

The President acknowledged that no financial compensation could replace lost lives but pledged government support for victims.

He also instructed security chiefs, including the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), to track down those responsible.

A committee will be set up to assess damages and recommend compensation, with Tinubu stressing that families affected must receive “minimum comfort” despite the irreplaceable loss of loved ones.

During the meeting, Tinubu sympathised with victims, including a woman named Rhoda who lost her son in the attack.

Tijani explained that the surveillance system would be powered by artificial intelligence and deployed first in Jos before expanding across the state.

He announced that similar technology is already in use in Lagos and Enugu, adding that the violence in Plateau after more than two decades was “heartbreaking.”

Plateau State has long struggled with recurring violence, often linked to communal and ethnic tensions.

The government hopes the new digital infrastructure will help curb the cycle of attacks.
