The United States (US) Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a recall of all lots of Christopher Ranch and Garland peeled garlic after learning that the products may harbour Clostridium botulinum, the bacterium responsible for botulism.
According to reports, the recall, issued on 1 April, covers garlic sold at Tops Friendly Markets in New York, Pennsylvania and Vermont.
It applies to Christopher Ranch Peeled Garlic in 6‑ounce bags (UPC 74574‑10852) and Garland Fresh Peeled Garlic in 6‑ounce bags (UPCs 71894‑00000 and 68826‑75340).
Officials discovered the problem during a routine inspection, finding that the garlic was not stored at sufficiently low temperatures to prevent bacterial growth.
The FDA warned that peeled garlic left unrefrigerated can create conditions favourable for the development of botulism.
Botulism is a rare but potentially fatal form of food poisoning that attacks the nervous system.

Symptoms can include weakness, dizziness, blurred or double vision, difficulty speaking or swallowing, and in severe cases, paralysis and respiratory failure may occur.
The illness typically develops within 12 to 36 hours of eating contaminated food, though onset can range from four hours to eight days.
No illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalled garlic, however, the FDA urged consumers to seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms after possible exposure.
Furthermore, shoppers were advised not to taste, cook or consume the garlic, even if it appears normal.
Customers should check their refrigerators and return any affected products to Tops Friendly Markets for a full refund.
For further information, consumers were advised contact the Tops Friendly Markets customer service team on 1‑800‑522‑2522.
