Akpabio Calls on States to Emulate Lagos at Project Launch

Nigeria’s Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has called on states across the country to follow Lagos State’s approach to governance, citing disciplined financial management and a clear focus on service delivery.

Akpabio spoke in Lagos on Wednesday while commissioning three key projects delivered by the state government, where he represented President Bola Tinubu at the ceremony.

Commending Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his team, Akpabio said Lagos had set a benchmark other states should replicate.

You have shown that governance must be about service delivery,” the Senate President said, adding that the projects reflected a broader national ambition.

These projects align with our national vision, a Nigeria that is modern, digitally enabled and economically strong. This is the standard we must replicate across the country,” he said.

The projects commissioned were the Ojota–Opebi Link Bridge, the Lagos State Geographical Information System (LAGIS) Building, and the Lagos State Multi-Agency Building.

In his welcome address, Sanwo-Olu said his administration intended to accelerate delivery in the remaining 416 days before the end of his tenure, with a renewed push on infrastructure, institutional strengthening and quality of life.

As we commission these projects, we are mindful that there is still more to be done

In the 400-plus days ahead, we will double down on investment in infrastructure, strengthen our institutions, and pursue intentional improvements in the quality of life for all Lagosians,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu stated that the closing phase of his administration would not be a slowdown, arguing that high standards must be sustained to the end.

For us, finishing only makes sense if it is done well. Winding down is not an excuse to lower standards. It is an opportunity to ramp up momentum and drive energetically towards the finish line,” he said.

Reflecting on his seven years in office, the governor credited Lagos’ reform agenda under the THEMES+ framework and increased revenues for enabling more ambitious projects, while acknowledging federal support as a key factor in delivery.
