Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, mother of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, has died in Cairo, Egypt, after a prolonged illness.
Hajiya Umma El-Rufai passed away on Friday at an advanced age, surrounded by family members.
A family source confirmed that she had been living in Cairo with her son since he left office in 2023.
She is survived by children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Her grandson, Mohammed Bello El-Rufai, announced the news on social media, writing:

“Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un. From Allah we came and to Him we shall all return. I would like to inform the public of the demise of my grandmother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, who passed away a few hours ago.
"She is the biological mother of our father, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai. We are grateful for the life she lived and may Allah bless her gentle soul. On behalf of our family, we seek your prayers."
The death comes at a time when Nasir El-Rufai is facing legal proceedings.
He is currently in detention under the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) over allegations of financial misconduct.
The former governor was arraigned before a Federal High Court in Kaduna on 24 March 2026.
