Tolkan passed away peacefully at his home in Lake Placid, New York, surrounded by loved ones, according to co-writer Bob Gale.

Born in 1931 in Calumet, Wisconsin, Tolkan's early life was hit by hardship as his father was frequently incarcerated, and he himself dropped out of school at 15.

However, a stint in the US Navy during the Korean War and a subsequent college education on the GI Bill set him on a path towards acting.

Tolkan's breakthrough came in the 1970s, with roles in films like Love and Death and Serpico.

He worked with esteemed directors, including Sidney Lumet and Woody Allen, and appeared in the original Broadway production of Glengarry Glen Ross.

A devoted husband of over 50 years, Tolkan is survived by his wife Parmalee.

His legacy as a character actor continues to delight audiences, with his memorable performances remaining an integral part of cinematic history.
