CAN Condemns Palm Sunday Killings in Plateau as Police Confirm 14 Deaths

The President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Archbishop Daniel Okoh, has condemned the deadly attack on residents of Angwan Rukuba in Jos North, Plateau State, describing the violence as unacceptable and deeply troubling.

RoundReports understands that the assault, which occurred on Palm Sunday in the Gari Ya Waye area of Jos North, saw armed men reportedly dressed in security uniforms open fire on residents.

While community sources initially put the death toll higher, the Plateau State Police Command has confirmed that 14 people were killed.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Monday, Archbishop Okoh said the attack shattered the sanctity of Palm Sunday, a day observed by Christians as one of peace, reflection and hope.

He said men, women and children were killed in what he described as a calculated assault on a civilian community.

This is not just tragic; it is unacceptable,” Okoh said, questioning how communities could be left vulnerable to violence even on a sacred day.

He added that Nigerians were weary of repeated mourning and official statements, and were demanding concrete action.

The CAN president called for the perpetrators to be identified, arrested and prosecuted swiftly, insisting that justice for the dead and protection for the living were non-negotiable.

Police spokesman SP Alfred Alabo said the Commissioner of Police, Bassey Ewah, had visited the scene to assess the situation and commiserate with affected residents.

Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang also toured the area, urging residents to remain calm while security agencies investigate the attack and work to bring those responsible to justice.

The latest violence adds to ongoing security concerns in parts of Plateau State, where communities have repeatedly called for stronger protection and a lasting end to deadly attacks.
