Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has denied branding naval officer Lt AM Yerima a fool, clarifying that his remarks were aimed at condemning the execution of illegal orders, not insulting the individual.
Speaking during a press briefing aired on Channels Television, Wike addressed the controversy surrounding his recent confrontation with Yerima at a disputed construction site in Abuja.
"Some say I called the boy a fool; I meant you cannot carry an illegal order," Wike said, insisting that his words were misinterpreted and taken out of context.
The minister’s comments follow widespread public reaction to a viral video showing a tense exchange between him and the naval officer, who had reportedly resisted the enforcement of a demolition order issued by the FCT Administration.
Wike explained that the site had been cordoned off by armed personnel acting on questionable directives, and that his intervention was necessary to uphold the rule of law.
Wike lamented the growing trend of government officials being harassed while carrying out legitimate duties.
The Minister cited multiple instances where directors and deputy directors were obstructed by individuals leveraging military or political connections.
"We cannot allow a situation where people intimidate civil servants and flout regulations simply because they know someone in power," he said.
He further criticised the media for distorting facts and fuelling public misunderstanding.
"Some commentators write junk without verifying what truly happened," Wike said, urging journalists to investigate thoroughly before publishing narratives that could undermine governance.
He stressed the importance of legality in public service, warning that officials who execute unlawful orders risk personal liability and damage to institutional integrity.
"We must respect the law above personal ties or political interests," he said.
On land administration, Wike reiterated that plots allocated for government or public use must not be sold or occupied without formal approval.
He condemned attempts to circumvent due process, describing such actions as threats to transparency and development.
Wike further pledged to continue defending government officials from intimidation and to uphold lawful procedures in the FCT.
