Tinubu Reappoints Marwa as NDLEA Chairman for New Five-Year Term

President Bola Tinubu has renewed the appointment of Brig-Gen Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd) as Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), extending his leadership of the country’s anti-narcotics body for another five years.

Marwa, who has led the agency since January 2021 following his appointment by former President Muhammadu Buhari, will now remain in office until 2031.

His reappointment was announced on Friday in a State House statement signed by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

A former military governor of Lagos and Borno States, Marwa previously chaired the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Drug Abuse between 2018 and 2020.

His long career in the Nigerian military includes postings as brigade major of the 23 Armoured Brigade, Aide-de-Camp to then Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen Theophilus Danjuma, and academic registrar of the Nigerian Defence Academy.

He also served as Deputy Defence Adviser at Nigeria’s Embassy in Washington, DC, and later as Defence Adviser at the country’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations.

Marwa holds two postgraduate degrees: a Master of Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh and a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University.

His tenure at the NDLEA has been lauded by high-profile crackdowns on drug syndicates.

According to the Presidency, the agency has arrested more than 73,000 drug traffickers and seized over 15 million kilogrammes of illicit substances under his leadership.

The NDLEA has also broadened its national outreach with campaigns aimed at reducing drug abuse, particularly among young people.

President Tinubu, in the statement, described Marwa’s reappointment as a "vote of confidence" in his efforts to curb drug trafficking and addiction across the country.

He urged him to remain steadfast in pursuing drug cartels "out to destroy our people, especially the young ones."
