US Senator Lindsey Graham Dies at 71 after Sudden Illness

United States (US) Senator Lindsey Graham, one of the Republican Party's most prominent foreign policy voices and a close ally of President Donald Trump, has died at the age of 71 following a brief and sudden illness.

Graham's office announced his passing on Saturday evening in a statement released on X.

"On the evening of Saturday, July 11, U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham passed away from a brief and sudden illness.

"Senator Graham's family appreciates prayers at this time and asks for privacy during this incredibly difficult period," the statement read.

First elected to the Senate in 2002 after serving in the House of Representatives, Graham spent more than two decades as one of Washington's most recognisable figures.

He was a longstanding hawk on Iran, having advocated for isolating the country and curbing its missile and nuclear programmes since his days in Congress in the 1990s.

Over the course of his Senate career, Graham was known for his close friendship with the late Senator John McCain and, in more recent years, his alliance with Trump on national security and foreign affairs.

His death leaves a vacancy in the Senate and removes one of the party's most influential voices on international matters.
