Tinubu Retains Shettima as 2027 Running Mate

President Bola Tinubu has settled on Vice President Kashim Shettima as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election, ending months of speculation over the future of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket.

The decision was disclosed in an article by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the President on Media and Communications in the Office of the Vice President.

Nkwocha described the move as a reflection of Tinubu's confidence in Shettima's loyalty, capacity and commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Nkwocha said Shettima had proved his value since taking office, particularly as Chairman of the National Economic Council (NEC), where he has coordinated engagements between state governors, federal officials and economic managers.

His background as a former Borno State governor and senator, combined with his grasp of security and economic challenges, made him a strategic asset for the administration heading into 2027.

The article acknowledged that the Tinubu-Shettima same-faith ticket drew controversy during the 2023 election, but argued that the pair overcame it by presenting a message of competence and political partnership.

Nkwocha said retaining Shettima would help the APC maintain its political structure and its connection with northern voters, while avoiding the internal uncertainty that a change of running mate could trigger.

He was careful to note, however, that continuity on the ticket is no guarantee of victory, stressing that the administration must deliver tangible results and earn public confidence through performance before polling day.

"The Tinubu-Shettima partnership has now shifted from speculation to strategy," Nkwocha wrote.

He believed that the focus would now turn to how the administration translates continuity into public trust ahead of 2027.
