England Edge France 6-4 to Claim World Cup Bronze

The third-place match at the 2026 World Cup looked set to be a blowout, but the tide turned dramatically in the second half, as England edged out France 6-4 in a thrilling encounter on Saturday in Miami Gardens, Florida.

France manager Didier Deschamps had admitted before kick-off that his players had little appetite for the fixture, yet Les Bleus still fielded several of their leading names, including Kylian Mbappé, Michael Olise and Mike Maignan.

England, by contrast, rested regular starters Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and Jordan Pickford.

Despite the apparent advantage on paper, France found themselves in an early hole as the Three Lions tore into them throughout the first half.

England captain Declan Rice got the scoring underway inside the opening minutes, firing a stunning strike from the edge of the box past Maignan in just the third minute.

Defender Ezri Konsa then headed home from Rice's corner in the 18th minute to double England's lead.

As half-time approached, with France looking shell-shocked by the onslaught, forward Bukayo Saka struck twice within ten minutes to turn the match into what appeared to be a rout.

That was, however, only until the interval.

France responded with a quadruple substitution at the start of the second half, introducing reigning Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembélé alongside Lucas Digne, Dayot Upamecano and Bradley Barcola.

The changes had an immediate effect as within three minutes, Mbappé had scored his ninth goal of the tournament, overtaking Argentina's Lionel Messi at the top of the 2026 Golden Boot standings.

Barcola then pulled another goal back soon after, narrowing the deficit to 4-2, before Mbappé struck again in the 66th minute, his 22nd World Cup goal, breaking his earlier tie with Messi for the competition's all-time scoring record.

Olise also made history, with assists on both of Mbappé's goals taking his tally for the tournament to seven, surpassing Pelé's long-standing record for the most assists in a single World Cup.

Defensive frailties were evident on both sides throughout the contest, with goalkeepers Maignan and Henderson each called upon to produce important saves as chances continued to flow.

England introduced Bellingham and Elliot Anderson in an attempt to extend their advantage, and Bellingham came close in the 80th minute, only for his effort to be denied by Maignan.

Moments later, England defender Djed Spence was fouled inside the area by France's Malo Gusto, and Saka converted the resulting penalty to make it 5-3, completing a hat-trick and becoming only the fourth player in men's World Cup history to do so for England.

France refused to give up, pulling another goal back through Dembélé in stoppage time to set up a nervy finish.

Two minutes later, however, Bellingham settled matters, scoring to secure England's bronze medal, the country's best World Cup finish in 60 years.

The ten goals shared between the two sides became the highest-scoring World Cup match since 1982.

As England supporters inside Hard Rock Stadium broke into a rendition of Oasis's "Wonderwall," Mbappé was seen embracing England manager Thomas Tuchel, before the England squad received their bronze medals in a pitch-side ceremony.

Speaking after the match, Saka said the team had enjoyed "amazing results" throughout the tournament, though he admitted they had "fell short" of their ultimate ambitions.

Attention now turns to East Rutherford, New Jersey, where Argentina face Spain in Sunday's World Cup final.

Argentina will be chasing back-to-back titles, while Spain are seeking their first World Cup triumph since 2010.

Messi now trails Mbappé by two goals in the race for the Golden Boot, and by one in the all-time World Cup scoring charts.

The final kicks off at 3 pm ET at MetLife Stadium.
