Bellingham Breaks Silence with Poem after England's World Cup Exit

Jude Bellingham has broken his silence following England's World Cup exit at the hands of Argentina, sharing a poem titled "The Lions Way" in a heartfelt social media post.

The Real Madrid midfielder was one of the Three Lions' standout performers in North America and took the semi-final defeat in Atlanta as hard as any of his team-mates, having been seen in tears surrounded by friends and family in the stands after the final whistle.

Bellingham admitted that finding the right words had proved difficult, but said a poem shared with the squad by their driver in Kansas City had summed up his feelings.

Writing online, he thanked supporters back home and those who had travelled to America at their own expense to follow the team.

He urged fans not to let the sense of unity built during the campaign fade now the tournament was over, insisting England could achieve great things when the country stood together.

The poem, written and signed by driver Michael Chandler and dated 15 July, the day of England's meeting with Argentina, displays themes of quiet resilience, self-discipline and mental strength, framing true victory as mastery of one's own mind rather than simply the result on the pitch.

Several of Bellingham's England team-mates, including Reece James, Anthony Gordon and Jordan Henderson, responded to the post with heart emojis.

Hours earlier, captain Harry Kane had shared his own message to fans, describing the defeat as "hard to take" but insisting the squad would "go again."

Kane said the team had given everything over the previous seven weeks, adding that after eight years of "knocking on the door," England were still missing "that final piece of the jigsaw."

He praised the group for their fighting spirit throughout the tournament, singling out Bellingham as among those who had battled hardest, including his match-winning brace against Norway earlier in the competition.

Bellingham had a difficult evening against Argentina, becoming a frequent target of robust challenges during the first half.

Tensions boiled over at full-time when he was involved in a physical altercation with unused Argentina substitute Valentín Barco, striking the young Strasbourg player from behind and sparking a brief melee involving players from both sides.

What triggered the confrontation remains unclear, though footage has circulated showing Barco running onto the pitch to celebrate Enzo Fernández's 85th-minute equaliser directly in front of England's players, rather than joining his own team-mates by the corner flag.

Barco also appeared to say something to Bellingham moments before the pair clashed.

Reflecting on the defeat, Bellingham said there was much the squad could take from the experience, but admitted it was "gutting."

He said he had hoped to be part of an England team that finally delivered for its fans, adding that having to tell supporters the same disappointing story they had heard for years left him lost for words, his head "a bit fuzzy with disappointment."
