Officials in the Trump administration have reportedly asked the Bureau of Engraving and Printing to design a $250 banknote featuring President Donald Trump’s portrait.
The request, if carried out, would be the first time a living person appeared in the United States (US) currency in more than 150 years.
According to reports, the US Treasury has long held a policy against placing living persons on banknotes, a practice that dates back to the 1860s.
The proposal is said to have come from senior officials within the administration and was directed to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, which produces US paper currency.

It is not clear whether the Treasury Department has approved the request or whether any design work has started.
At present, the $100 bill is the highest denomination in general circulation in the United States.
If launched, a $250 note would therefore become the largest note in use.
However, neither the White House nor the Treasury Department has issued a public statement confirming the reports.
