A man has been arrested in Ogun State for allegedly creating and sharing a fake video of a bandit attack on social media to generate fear and attract followers.

The Ogun State Police Command said it detained Qawiyu Oloyede, a resident of Sokoto Road in Atan-Ota, after a video of him being questioned by officers began circulating online on Sunday.

Police said Oloyede, who described himself as a tailor, admitted to staging the footage.

He told investigators he made the clip to gain social media followers.

"I created the fake bandit attack and posted it on social media to gain followers.

"The Fulani that I used is a herder that used to bring his cows to graze behind my shop, even the Fulani herder did not want to participate in the act," he said.

Oloyede confessed that he had posted two such videos, one on Monday and another on Wednesday.

He added that he could not read or write and that his apprentice wrote the message accompanying the video.

"I don’t know how to even read and write, I didn’t go to school," he said.

The state police command's spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi disclosed that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).
