Abuja Chef Arrested over Alleged Theft of N150m in Luxury Items


Police in Nigeria have arrested a chef accused of drugging residents of an Abuja home and stealing luxury items worth one hundred and fifty million naira (N150m).

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) revealed on 25 May 2026 that operatives of the Force Intelligence Department-Intelligence Response Team (FID-IRT) arrested John Cosmos Govi over allegations of criminal conspiracy, housebreaking, administering suspected harmful substances, malicious damage to property, and theft.

According to the Force Public Relations Officer (PRO) DCP Anthony Placid, preliminary investigations found that Govi, who reportedly trained at a catering school in Cotonou, Benin Republic.

He was said to have secured employment as a chef in the residence after contacting two alleged accomplices identified as Peter and Moses who remain at large.

Police maintained Govi allegedly studied the household’s routine, movements and security arrangements before carrying out the operation on 23 April 2026.

The Force claimed that food prepared in the residence was laced with a suspected sedative to incapacitate occupants and security personnel.

Once the substance took effect, the suspect was said to have allowed his accomplices into the house. 

Furthermore, the group was accused of vandalising the CCTV system, ransacking the apartment and making off with cash and 20 luxury wristwatches valued at about N150 million.

Officers disclosed they intercepted the suspects while they were attempting to flee through the Gwagwalada axis towards Lagos. 

During the operation, police said they recovered an iPhone 17 Pro Max belonging to the victim and a suspected chemical substance, which has been sent for forensic analysis.
