Opposition Parties Meet in Solidarity over Mounting Pressure

Senior figures of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have paid a solidarity visit to the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing what both sides described as mounting political pressure on opposition parties in Nigeria.

The PDP delegation said the visit was prompted by recent developments affecting opposition groups, which it warned could undermine democratic competition and political plurality.

Party leaders told their hosts that the PDP had faced similar challenges in recent times, stressing the need for heightened vigilance and collective engagement.

Leading the PDP team was Seyi Makinde, alongside former minister Kabiru Tanimu Turaki and the party’s Board of Trustees chairman, Adolphus Wabara.

Other members of the delegation included Jerry Gana, Babangida Aliyu, Taofeek Arapaja, Inna Ciroma, Ishaya Bamayi, Fred Agbedi and the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong.

They were received by a broad coalition of ADC leaders, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Senate President David Mark and party elder Kashim Imam.

Others present were Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, Tunde Ogbeha, Peter Obi, Liyel Imoke, Rauf Aregbesola, Rotimi Amaechi and ADC spokesman Bolaji Abdullahi.

Responding, ADC leaders thanked the PDP for the visit and said Nigeria’s democracy was facing an “existential threat” through what they described as the systematic weakening of key opposition parties.

Both parties agreed to sustain dialogue and cooperation aimed at defending democratic values and institutions.

The meeting ended with a commitment to continued engagement across party lines, as opposition leaders warned that political plurality remained essential to Nigeria’s democratic stability.
