Building Collapse Injures Seven in Abuja

Seven construction workers were injured on Friday morning when a two-storey building under construction collapsed in Jikwoyi, within the Abuja Municipal Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

According to reports, the incident occurred around 11:00 am while workers were on site.

FCT's Emergency Management Department (FEMD) revealed that 17 workers were on the upper floor when the structure gave way.

The FEMD stated that five sustained injuries, while one man trapped at ground level was later rescued.

All the injured workers, including the rescued victim, have been taken to the Sisters of Nativity Hospital in Jikwoyi and are responding to treatment,” FEMD confirmed.

Rescue teams from FEMD, NEMA, Development Control, FCDA Engineering, Civil Defence, Federal Fire Service, and the FCT Police Command were deployed, the reports added.

It was further disclosed that excavation continued at the site to ensure no one remained trapped.

Barely an hour later, a separate emergency unfolded along the Kubwa Expressway in Bwari Area Council, where fire broke out at the Car Earloha Chery Centre near Arab Junction.

The blaze, which started around noon, destroyed part of the building and damaged equipment and documents, and that staff managed to move vehicles out of the premises, limiting losses.

FEMD’s Head of Search and Rescue, Monday Adie, said the fire was traced to an electrical fault.

Emergency responders from FEMD, the Federal Fire Service, the FCT Fire Service, and police were present at the scene.
