Former Kano Deputy Governor Resigns to ‘Safeguard Stability’

The immediate past Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has formally stepped down from office, citing the need to preserve peace and stability in the state.

In a resignation letter dated 27 March 2026 and addressed to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Gwarzo said his decision was voluntary and taken “in the spirit of responsibility and statesmanship” to allow the administration to move forward without distractions.

He explained that the move followed extensive consultations and reflection on the political climate in Kano, stressing that it should not be seen as an admission of wrongdoing.

This resignation is made voluntarily and should not be construed as an admission of any wrongdoing, but a decision in the interest of public service,” he wrote.

Gwarzo anchored his decision on Section 306(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which provides for voluntary resignation by public office holders.

He praised the people of Kano, the governor, the State Executive Council, the House of Assembly, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), traditional leaders and other stakeholders for their support during his tenure.

His departure comes against the backdrop of political and legal tensions in the state, with the Kano House of Assembly having initiated impeachment proceedings against him prior to his resignation.
