Troops Repel Coordinated Terrorist Attacks in Adamawa, Borno

Troops of the Joint Task Force, Operation Hadin Kai, have killed several terrorists and repelled coordinated attacks on military positions in Adamawa and Borno states, the army has said.

The operations followed attempts by insurgents to overrun patrol bases in the North-East in the early hours of Friday, 16 January.

According to the Acting Media Information Officer of Operation Hadin Kai, Lt Solomon Atokolo, alert troops foiled an attack on a patrol base at Sabon Gari in Madagali Local Government Area (LGA) of Adamawa State.

Atokolo disclosed the attackers came under swift fire from troops operating under Sector 4, with reinforcements deployed from Gulak and the Battalion Quick Reaction Force.

The terrorists were forced to retreat after failing to breach the base, abandoning the assault without causing casualties or damage to military equipment.

Following the engagement, troops conducted clearance operations in the surrounding area, scanning for improvised explosive devices and booby traps to ensure the safety of civilians and personnel.

On the same day, militants also launched a large-scale, multi-directional attack on Forward Operating Base Azir in Borno State.

The army said the attackers attempted to breach the defensive perimeter but were met with sustained firepower from ground troops, supported by air strikes from the Air Component and other Nigerian Army aerial platforms.

Although rocket-propelled grenade fire affected troop-carrying vehicles and partially damaged a CCTV control room, the military maintained control of the base, forcing the attackers to withdraw.

Weapons and ammunition recovered after the clashes included a 60mm mortar tube, mortar bombs, locally fabricated explosives, heavy machine gun rounds and hundreds of rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition.

Atokolo further revealed follow-up operations led to heavy losses among the fleeing terrorists, describing the outcome as a significant setback to insurgent activity in the area.
