NiMet Warns of Dust Haze in North, Thunderstorms in South

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast a spell of dust haze across the northern and central regions, alongside cloudy conditions and scattered thunderstorms in the south, from Monday to Wednesday.

In its weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, NiMet said moderate dust haze with visibility ranging between 2km and 5km is expected on Monday over parts of Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Gombe, Bauchi, Adamawa, Taraba, Borno and Yobe.

It insisted that the remainder of the North is likely to see slight dust haze throughout the period, and across the central states, slight dust haze is anticipated from Monday through Wednesday.

For the southern region, NiMet projected cloudy skies with intervals of sunshine on Monday, with isolated morning thunderstorms over parts of Cross River and Akwa Ibom.

Later in the day, thunderstorms with light rainfall are likely in Rivers, Delta, Ondo, Lagos, Edo, Ogun, Bayelsa, Cross River and Akwa Ibom.

On Tuesday, the agency expects the dust haze pattern in the North to persist, maintaining visibility at 2km to 5km.

The central belt is also forecast to remain under slight dust haze, while the South will experience cloudiness with chances of isolated thunderstorms across Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta, Cross River and Akwa Ibom later in the day.

By Wednesday, moderate dust haze is projected to settle again over the northern region, with similar conditions extending into the central states.

Cloudy morning conditions are forecast for the South, followed by isolated thunderstorms and light rain in parts of Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Lagos, Edo, Ogun and Ondo.

NiMet advised the public to exercise caution, saying that dust particles would remain in suspension in the North. It urged people with asthma or other respiratory conditions to limit exposure.

The agency also warned motorists to drive carefully during rainfall and encouraged airline operators to obtain airport-specific weather reports for flight planning.

Residents were urged to stay updated through NiMet’s regular advisories.
