The Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested eight suspected cultists following the assault of a university student at a hotel in Yenagoa.
According to a statement from the command, the incident occurred on 14 July at around 10 pm along Mike Okokpo Street, Yenagoa, after operatives received a distress call from a member of the public.
Police said the caller reported that a group of eight young men suspected to be cultists, who were lodging at the hotel, had ganged up and assaulted one Prince Hansen, a 300-level student at Niger Delta University (NDU), Amassoma, within the hotel premises, causing him grievous bodily harm.
The attack was allegedly carried out over an accusation that the victim owed N70,000.
"On 14th July 2026 at about 2200 hours, following a distress call by public spirited individual, along Mike Okokpo street, Yenagoa, that a group of eight (8) young men suspected to be cultists lodged in the hotel, ganged up and beat one Prince Hansen ‘m’, a 300 level student of Niger Delta University (NDU) Amassoma within the hotel premises, causing grievous bodily harm on the allegation that the victim was owing (N70,000)," the statement read in part.

Operatives attached to the command's Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) responded to the distress call and arrested all eight suspects.
They were identified as Desmond Linus, 20; Richman Serbokuro, 21; Plain Lion, 19; Richman Joel, 20; Solomon Damian, 23; Destiny Serbokuro, 24; Isaac Goodnews, 22; and Theresa Francis, 22.
Six of those arrested are students at Niger Delta University, Amassoma.
A search of the suspects led to the recovery of substances suspected to be Indian hemp, along with Swinol and charms.
The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Musa Mohammed, said investigations were ongoing and that the suspects would be charged to court once the investigation concludes.
