Nigeria to Switch Off Analogue TV on June Nationwide Digital Switchover

Nigeria will complete its transition from analogue to digital television broadcasting on 17 June 2026, the Federal Government has announced,  ending a process that began 17 years ago.

Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation confirmed the date last week as he relaunched the Digital Switch Over programme.

The rollout will use a satellite-first model branded "Free TV" to deliver digital signals nationwide.

Under the plan, Nigerians will gain access to about 100 free-to-air television channels through the new platform.

Idris said the switch is designed to improve picture quality, expand channel choice, and extend coverage to areas not reached by existing terrestrial signals.

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) said digital terrestrial transmission currently covers eight states after N60 billion was spent on the project since 2009.

To speed up nationwide access, the NBC said the new model will prioritise satellite delivery before terrestrial networks are fully deployed.

Once analogue transmission ends on 17 June, broadcasters will move all channels to the digital platform.

Viewers will need compatible equipment to continue receiving television services after the switchover date.

The government maintained the transition forms part of Nigeria’s commitment to international agreements on digital migration and is intended to modernise the country’s broadcasting infrastructure.
