Facebook and Instagram users across the globe were hit with sudden login failures on Friday afternoon, 12 June 2026, with thousands reporting they had been kicked out of their accounts and unable to load feeds, messages or notifications.
Reports began emerging just after midday, as users from the United Kingdom (UK), the Netherlands, the Philippines, Nigeria, and beyond took to other platforms to ask whether Meta’s services were down.
"Unknown error" and Frozen Apps
Many said Facebook was throwing up error messages or simply refusing to load content. Instagram users reported problems with direct messages, search and timelines that would not refresh. Messenger users were not spared either, with a wave of complaints about being logged out without warning.
One user on X wrote: "Anybody else just been logged out of Facebook messenger and can't log back in? Unknown error."

Fears of a Hack
The sudden logouts left many users fearing their accounts had been compromised.
One user said: "Wait, is someone trying to hack my account?"
"For a minute there, I thought I was hacked," one user wrote on an online forum.
Another added: "Facebook and Instagram are both down for me. Won’t load my notifications or allow me to like or comment on stuff or even load messages."
