12 June: Tinubu to Address National Assembly on Democracy Day

President Bola Tinubu will address a joint session of the National Assembly on 12 June as the centrepiece of this year’s Democracy Day commemorations, the Federal Government confirmed on Tuesday.

The address is one of several events planned by an Inter-Ministerial Committee inaugurated to coordinate nationwide activities for Democracy Day 2026.

According to the committee, the programme will begin with a World Press Conference on 4 June and include special Juma’at prayers on 5 June, an inter-denominational church service on 7 June, a public lecture on 9 June, and youth and women-focused events on 10 June.

A presidential broadcast and Democracy Day Gala Night will close the line-up on 12 June.

Inaugurating the committee, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume said the anniversary offers a moment to reflect on the sacrifices made by those who campaigned for democratic rule.

He paid tribute to the late Chief MKO Abiola and others involved in the June 12 1993 struggle, whose push for free elections led to 12 June being recognised as Democracy Day.

"The democratic values and institutions being strengthened across the country today are founded on the sacrifices and struggles of patriots and democrats who fought for the enthronement of democratic rule in Nigeria," Akume said, according to a statement by the SGF’s media aide Yomi Odunuga.

He added that the commemoration would also allow the Tinubu administration to highlight progress on institutional reforms and national development despite current socio-economic pressures.

With 10 days to the anniversary, Akume urged committee members to begin work immediately, noting the celebration would be "modest but purposeful" in line with the government’s fiscal responsibility pledge.

The committee, chaired by the SGF, includes the Ministers of Information, Interior, Defence, Finance and Foreign Affairs, the National Security Adviser (NSR), the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the Director-General (DG)of the Department of State Services (DSS).

Nigeria celebrates Democracy Day each 12 June to remember the restoration of civilian rule in 1999 and to honour the legacy of the 1993 election widely believed to have been won by Abiola.
