Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Labour Party (LP)’s vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has declared his intention to contest the presidency in 2027, days after Peter Obi left the party for the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Baba-Ahmed announced his ambition on Wednesday at a rally held at the Labour Party’s national secretariat in Abuja, where he addressed party officials and supporters.
“I have made myself available to contest for the office in 2027. I’m not following anybody’s trajectory or stepping into anybody’s shoes,” he said, adding that he had nursed presidential ambitions even before Obi entered the 2023 race.
His declaration comes shortly after Obi formally exited the Labour Party for the ADC, a move some opposition figures have framed as part of a broader strategy to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next general election.
Baba-Ahmed appears aligned with the Julius Abure-led faction of the Labour Party, which has criticised Obi’s defection as a political misstep.
Last year, the Kaduna-born politician attended a National Executive Council meeting convened by the Abure faction, presenting himself as a conciliatory figure amid the party’s internal divisions, linking Obi to the rival Nenadi Usman-led faction.
Reflecting on his political history, Baba-Ahmed recalled his participation in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential primaries in October 2018, held in Port Harcourt.
He said he had sought Mr Obi’s support during the contest, describing the encounter as evidence of political maturity and national outlook.
Addressing fears often raised around religion and ethnicity in Nigerian politics, Baba-Ahmed said his decision to run was driven by the country’s challenges rather than personal identity.
“Yes, I am a practising Muslim… yes, I am a Hausa man, and the constitution permits me to run. I am stepping forward because Nigeria needs help,” he said.
He added that he would comply fully with party procedures and electoral regulations, adding that he would wait for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to release the official timetable and for the Labour Party to open its process for aspirants.
