Burkina Faso Military Claims Foiled Assassination Plot Against Leader

Burkina Faso’s ruling military junta has announced that it thwarted a “sophisticated” plot to assassinate the country’s leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré.

The country’s Security Minister, Mahamadou Sana, revealed the details in a national television broadcast, saying intelligence services intercepted the operation in its final stages.

According to Sana, the alleged plot involved plans to kill Traoré at close range or by planting explosives at his residence shortly after 11 pm on Saturday, 3 January.

The conspirators were also reportedly preparing to target other senior military and civilian figures, mobilise supporters, and disable the nation’s drone-launch facilities to prevent foreign intervention.

Sana claimed that the conspiracy was funded from a neighbouring country and that authorities uncovered a leaked video in which the plotters discussed their intentions.

He assured the public that the situation was under control and urged citizens “not to be misled, out of naivety, into dangerous schemes.”

The announcement comes amid heightened political tensions in the Sahel region, where Burkina Faso has experienced multiple coups in recent years, and security remains a pressing issue.
