Bayelsa Wins $400,000 as South-South Runner-up in Primary Healthcare Award

Bayelsa State Government has emerged first runner-up in the South-South zone of the Primary Health Care Leadership Challenge Award, securing a cash prize of $400,000.

The award, which was won in the region by Rivers State, is aimed at incentivising Nigerian governors to improve the delivery of primary healthcare services.

It is organised by the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) in collaboration with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), with funding support from the Aliko Dangote Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Governor Douye Diri also received a separate health-sector honour called "the Distinguished Leadership Award" from the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), in recognition of his administration’s support for the association.

The governor thanked the organisers of both awards and charged members of the Bayelsa State Executive Council (SEC) to intensify efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery across the state.

He paid tribute to the late Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, for his supervision of the Ministry of Health, and said the $400,000 prize would be reinvested in the health sector for the benefit of Bayelsans.

The two awards were presented to the governor by the Commissioner for Health, Professor Seiyefa Brisibe, who represented him at the ceremonies.
