Former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi has announced the death of his elder brother, Mike Okaka, describing the loss as shocking and deeply painful.
In a statement issued on Saturday, 2 May, 2026, Obi said he received the news of Okaka’s passing in the United States (US) with profound sadness.
He conveyed condolences on behalf of his family and the wider Obidient movement, saying that the loss was one that would be keenly felt by all who shared in Okaka’s ideals.
Obi described the late Okaka as a devoted supporter of the Obidient movement and a firm believer in the vision of a new Nigeria.
He said Okaka’s dedication, energy and unwavering commitment to the principles of good governance distinguished him as a dependable voice in the collective struggle for national renewal.
"Mike was a devoted supporter of the Obidient movement and a passionate believer in the vision of a new Nigeria.

"His dedication, energy, and unwavering commitment to the ideals of good governance were truly remarkable.
"He stood firm in the collective struggle for a better nation and made meaningful contributions toward the cause we all cherish," part of the statement read.
Mike Okaka served during Obi’s administration as Special Assistant (SA) to the Governor of Anambra State on Diaspora Affairs, where he worked to strengthen engagement between the state government and Nigerians living abroad.
Beyond public service, he was active in business and philanthropy.
He was President and Chief Executive Officer of Mabel Hotels Ltdnand Vice President of the VinMabel Foundation, a non-profit organisation based in Asaba known for providing palliatives and humanitarian support to vulnerable communities.
Professionally, he also served as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Managing Director (MD) of Garden City Pharmacy in the Detroit Metropolitan Area of Michigan, US.
The statement did not disclose details about Okaka’s death.
