PDP Board of Trustees Assumes Party Leadership Following S'Court Ruling

The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced it will take charge of the party’s national leadership, citing provisions in the PDP constitution.

In a statement issued on Thursday, 30th April 2026, BoT Chairman Senator Adolphus Wabara said the move was necessary to prevent a leadership vacuum after a Supreme Court judgment delivered the same day.

According to the statement, the Supreme Court invalidated the PDP’s National Convention held in Ibadan, Oyo State, between 15th and 16th November 2025, which had produced the Kabiru Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC).

In addition, the court upheld the suspension of three party officials: Senator Samuel Anyanwu, National Secretary; Hon Umar Bature, National Organising Secretary; and Kamaldeen Ajibade, National Legal Adviser.

The BoT said the ruling meant that subsequent actions taken by the suspended officials were void.

This includes the appointment of Abdulrahman Mohammed as Acting National Chairman and the outcome of the party convention held in Abuja on 29th March 2026.

Citing Section 32(5) of the PDP Constitution as amended in 2017, the BoT stated it would now oversee the party’s national affairs.

An emergency meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) will be convened to appoint an Interim NWC.

The BoT said the interim body would manage the National Secretariat and ensure the party meets all timelines set by the Electoral Act ahead of the 2027 general elections.

All PDP staff have been directed to resume at the National Secretariat under BoT leadership pending the new appointments.

The statement commended PDP governors, the National Assembly caucus, state chapters, and youth and women wings for their support.

It called on party members to set aside differences and work towards reconciliation.

The PDP has suffered enough. The time has come for us to make sacrifices and chart a new course for our party,” Wabara said.
