TikTok Creator Esther ‘Sunshine’ Thomas Dies after Surgery Complications

The Nigerian social media community has been left reeling by the death of TikTok content creator Esther Thomas, popularly known as Sunshine, who died following complications linked to surgery for fibroids.

Sunshine, a rising online entertainer best known for her skits alongside fellow creator Chidera Mmadu, reportedly fell ill on 28 December 2025 after complaining of severe abdominal pain.

According to accounts shared by Chidera, she was first taken to Orchid General Hospital, where she was treated with pain relief medication but received no further medical intervention.

Sources close to the family said they were not informed that doctors at the hospital were on strike at the time.

Sunshine remained at the facility for several days, during which her condition reportedly failed to improve, with persistent complaints of intense pain.

It was only after repeated enquiries that the family was told about the industrial action, according to reports.

She was later transferred to a private hospital, where medical tests revealed a significantly enlarged fibroid, identified as the source of her prolonged abdominal distress. Doctors recommended urgent surgery, which was subsequently carried out.

However, complications reportedly developed after the operation, and Esther Thomas died shortly afterwards.

News of her death triggered a wave of tributes across social media platforms, with fans and fellow content creators describing her as a vibrant and promising talent whose life was cut short.

Sunshine had built a loyal following on TikTok through relatable comedy skits and collaborations, rapidly emerging as a familiar face within Nigeria’s online creative space.
