The Ogun State Police Command has launched an investigation into the killing of a mother of three, Ayobami Ayanwale, who was allegedly stabbed by her husband, Ayoola Ayanwale, during a domestic dispute in the Ojodu Berger area of the state.
The incident occurred on Thursday night at Olutayo Alao Street, River Valley Estate when Ayobami was rushed to hospital with stab wounds but was confirmed dead by a medical doctor, police sources said.
Her husband fled the scene, prompting an immediate manhunt, however, on Friday, his body was discovered in the Sotubo area, where he was found gasping for breath in an open field and later died in what police believe may have been a suicide.
A security source told journalists that officers recovered three knives from the couple’s residence.
It was said that items found on the man when his body was discovered included a bottle containing a suspected liquid substance, two mobile phones, a voter’s card and an ATM card, which helped confirm his link to the earlier killing.
The couple’s three children have since been placed in the care of relatives.
A neighbour, who identified herself on social media as @Irebamiolakanmi, alleged that the killing followed a prolonged pattern of domestic violence.
She claimed the attack took place in the presence of the children and said she had previously advised the deceased to leave the marriage.
The brother of the deceased told TVC that Ayobami managed to call him after she was attacked. “She called me that her husband had stabbed her and that I should start coming. I rushed from the highland, but before we got to the hospital, she had passed,” he said.
A young girl living with the family alleged that the man had earlier asked her to leave the house on the night of the incident and claimed he had tampered with a pot of soup.
Friends of the deceased also said Ayobami had suffered abuse in the marriage and had considered relocating before the attack.
Confirming the case to PUNCH, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the matter had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department.
“The case has been harmonised and transferred to the State CID for investigation. Their bodies have been deposited in the mortuary,” he said.
